DHL IN BANGLADESH
DHL was founded in 1969 to deliver documents between San Francisco and Honolulu. The company expanded its service throughout the world by the late 1970s. Air Express Services of DHL was established in Bangladesh on 10th May. This was on request of Standard Chartered Bank Singapore (SCB - 1st Customer in BD). Mr. Henry Jacob was 1st Country General Manager. DHL Express in Bangladesh started its office through its Agent Homebound Packers & Shippers Limited in only one room in Gulshan, Dhaka within Homebound office premises. DHL started its operation with only 5 staffs, only one baby taxi and one delivery van.
Since it’s starting DHL expanded its operation in Bangladesh to help local business grow globally. The timely launch of different product and services has helped to fulfill the needs of local enterprises. DHL is the first company to have Air Side Express Handling Unit at Airport in 1994. It was extended, modernized at the international standard in next phases later. The launch of two innovative packaging solutions DHL ‘Jumbo’ and ‘Jumbo Junior’ helped thousands of enterprises grow their business globally.
DHL pioneered door to door import service understanding the growing demand of the RMG sector in 2001. Standing at 2013, DHL offers different service and product for both outbound and inbound to cater different needs of the customers. DHL develops its capability to provide sector specific solutions for its customers.
DHL is the first to introduce frontline customer service in the industry in 1997. Now DHL has the most advanced state of the Art customer service department in the country.
Desmond Quiah took over the position of Country Manager for the 2nd time. (His 1st tenure in DHLB was 1991 – 1997) in 2000. Under his abled leadership, DHL started to grow aligning with the requirement of 21st century. The installation of modern Quality Control Center (2006), custom built shipment processing facility (2007), introduction of six sigma based efficiency program “First Choice” (2008), launching of Certified International Specialist (2011); a globally award winning training program for the all employees of DP DHL, have accelerated the path towards a greatness for DHL. DHL expanded its retail network with 25 service points nationally which is the highest among the players.
DHL and The Daily Star jointly launched on 6th November, which was the first award of its kind in Bangladesh to recognize the business laurels of the country. This award has recognized 50 business persons and institutions in last 13 years.
DHL always believes that giving back to society is a responsibility. DHL involves in different CSR activities as part of its global campaign “Living Responsibly”. DHL volunteers extended their effort in the programs like afforestation, education for underprivileged and blind children, pure water supply for schools in different times.

Considering the need of growing economy, DHL ‘Jumbo’ and ‘Jumbo Junior’ packaging solution were launched. Designed to air freight goods weighing up to 25 KG and 10 KG. This packaging solution helped thousands of enterprises grow their business globally.
First Front Line Customer service went live on 6th June. DHL Express proudly deserves the credit to bring sophisticated customer service in Bangladesh.
2nd flag bearer – Mr. Dalip Handa started his role in DHLB as Country Manager.

DHL Bangladesh exceeded 10 million Euro Revenue milestone and was upgraded to Tier 3 country (from Very Small to Small category) in DHL network.
All our operations vehicle started running by environment friendly CNG (compressed natural gas).
Went live with QCC from April. First to have a Quality control centre. The role of Quality Control Center is to ensure real time monitoring of shipments, arranging network mapping and ensuring flawless service worldwide.
Introduced a unique trade facilitation customer program in the name of “Expanding the Horizon” for offering our customers an environment to expand their horizon.
Moved to a custom built shipment processing facility of more than 30000 sq ft in Tejgaon industrial area from only a 5000 sq ft residential building.
Change of ownership- DHL International GmbH acquired 90% share of DHL Worldwide Express Bangladesh Pvt. Limited (DHLB).
DHL Worldwide Express Bangladesh Pvt. Limited took over the Agency business from Homebound under Joint Venture Arrangement from January 01. DHL International GmbH have made a direct investment of Euro 2.4 Million to acquire Agency Business.
First Choice kick-off meeting was held in Feb in DHL BD. First Choice is a global platform to bring efficiency in the service, process and tools following the six sigma principle. Subsequently, 3 employees achieved Silver Certification (1 initiative was recognized as a Lighthouse Example). 2 employees achieved First Choice Gold certification, first two of its kind among South Asian countries.
DHLE launched Certified International Specialist (CIS); a globally award winning training program for the employees of DP DHL. CIS foundation training was launched on 10th April. 100% employees gradually attended the training.
12th DHL-Daily Star Bangladesh Business Award has been arranged. A total of 50 awards have been given as a recognition of the best of business in Bangladesh.
